I think this can cause the same problem.
For example...
At first:
"ls" --version
cmd^
After the first memmove():
ls" --version
cmd^
After the strchr():
ls" --version
p^
After the second memmove():
ls --version
p^
Return to build_argv():
ls --version
cmd^
