Yes, bytes are more closely analogous to volts (6 dB per doubling) than
watts (3 dB per doubling).
This page explains why there are apparently two ways to calculate decibels:

In actual fact, they're the same calculation, but it's easier to
understand that in a volts vs. watts (power) context than in the tongue
in cheek context we have here.
